The Baltimore-Washington Forecast Office has been recruiting and training spotters into its expanded network since 1990. We currently have about 2000 active volunteers who cover 44 counties plus Baltimore City and the District of Columbia. Our network stretches west from the Chesapeake Bay across the eastern panhandle of West Virginia and south from the Mason-Dixon line through Fredericksburg, Charlottesville and Staunton in Virginia. Over two-thirds of our spotters are amateur radio operators. This special SKYWARN badge is available to all spotters who have received at least their Basic I training and have been assigned their spotter number from the Baltimore-Washington Forecast Office. Specialized badges are available for Amateur Radio Coordinator, Assistant Amateur Radio Coordinator, WX4LWX Station Manager, Administrative Assistant, Amateur Radio Advisor, Net Control Station, and SKYWARN Station Operator. All National Capital Area Skywarn badges will be processed upon the approval of the SKYWARN Coordinator. To learn more about the National Capital Area Skywarn group, please visit their web site.
